2013 Hyundai Santa Fe previewed on Twitter ahead of NY reveal

Very nice....

By Alex Nunez
In a lineup packed with new and/or freshly styled vehicles, Hyundai's two larger crossovers, the Santa Fe and its all-but-forgotten three-row counterpart, the Veracruz, still wear the automaker's last-generation styling language. That will be addressed (in part, at least) at next month's New York Auto Show when Hyundai unveils the 2013 Santa Fe.

To get people talking, Hyundai published two renderings of its new CUV this evening via its Twitter feed. Predictably, the 2013 Santa Fe gets sharper lines that are much more in keeping with the rest of the model lineup, and the new face validates a spy photo that hit the web back in January.

Hyundai calls the crossover's fresh styling language "Storm Edge," saying it's an evolution of the "Fluidic Sculpture" theme it's been using the last few years.Based on the the profile shot, which shows a very small window aft of the rear doors, it appears that the Santa Fe will, for the time being, continue to be a two-row crossover (its optional third row was canned after the 2009 model year) that's designed to battle the likes of the Nissan Murano, Ford Edge, and Toyota Venza.

Whether Hyundai will also use the occasion to formally confirm the rumored long-wheelbase, three-row variant to replace the Veracruz remains to be seen. It's clear the automaker knows that it's hurting in that department.

Carscoop!: Next Gen Hyundai Santa Fe caught undisguised?!?

Pictures allegedly showing an undisguised prototype of the new generation of the Hyundai Santa Fe are making the internet rounds today (keep in mind the front fascia image was created by mirroring the right hand side photo).

The styling cues such as the six-point grille and exterior mirrors seem to match the camouflaged test cars we've spied over the past few months, though we're not sure if this is the South Korean market version or not.

Either way, it won't be long before we find out as the new Santa Fe, which will probably be called iX45 in select regions such as Europe and Australia, is scheduled to receive its world premiere at the 2012 New York Auto Show in April.

Along with the new skin, the Korean SUV will also benefit from a revamped and more upper scale interior as well as a new engine lineup that may include a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline unit in North America and Euro6 diesels in Europe and other international markets.

Canadian Production of the All-New 2012 Honda CR-V Begins at Honda of Canada Mfg. in Alliston, ON

ALLISTON, ON, Jan. 23, 2012

More than 70 per cent of Honda vehicles sold in Canada will now be built in Canada

ALLISTON, ON, Jan. 23, 2012 /CNW/ - Production of the all-new 2012 Honda CR-V, Canada's top-selling import SUV, officially began today at Honda of Canada Mfg. (HCM) in Alliston, ON. With the addition of CR-V to the Ontario facility, Honda Canada's two best-selling vehicles, the Honda Civic and CR-V, are now being made in Canada by Canadians.

"The Honda CR-V has set the gold standard in the compact SUV segment and has been embraced by Canadians since it arrived here in 1997," said Jerry Chenkin, executive vice president, Honda Canada Inc. "We're proud that the all-new 2012 CR-V will be Canadian built."

The addition of the CR-V to HCM's production lineup makes it the first Honda plant in North America to produce four distinct models (Civic, CR-V, MDX and ZDX) on one line, demonstrating the flexibility and capability of HCM and its Associates.

"It certainly has been a challenging year for our 4,200 Associates at HCM," said Gilles Madore, vice president, Honda of Canada Mfg. "But with Civic being named Canada's number one-selling passenger car for the fourteenth straight year and the addition of Honda's second best-selling vehicle in Canada to our facility, we're incredibly proud of what we have accomplished and are ready to provide Canadians with a made-in-Canada CR-V."

In November 2011, Honda celebrated 25 years of manufacturing in Canada at its facilities in Alliston, Ontario. Since 1987, Honda has built close to 6 million vehicles and invested more than $2.6 billion in Canada. The company also purchases more than $1.1 billion in goods from Canadian suppliers every year.

"The inauguration of Honda's new CR-V at the Alliston plant in Ontario signals the strength of the auto sector in Ontario, new momentum for Honda and demonstrates confidence in the province's economy," said Brad Duguid, Minister of Economic Development and Innovation. "This move helps secure our position as a top auto manufacturing hub in North America and protect valuable sector jobs."

About the 2012 CR-V

For 2012, the fourth-generation Honda CR-V embraces a sophisticated styling direction in conjunction with improved interior comfort, improved fuel economy, a smoother and quieter ride, and more innovative features as part of a 'total package' approach. Long considered as a benchmark vehicle in its class with high levels of quality, refinement and value, the 2012 CR-V is designed to exceed customer expectations in Canada's compact sport-utility vehicle (SUV) segment with increased value resulting from added content and lower MSRPs across the entire CR-V lineup.

Starting at just $25,990, the all-new Honda CR-V has its lowest starting price in more than a decade.

Globe and Mail: 2012 Honda CRV: Honda Gets its Mojo Back

by jeremy cato

Smaller is bigger. That’s the start of the 2012 Honda CR-V story.

What’s more, this remade compact crossover is more powerful, has better fuel economy, a better all-wheel-drive system and a so-called “value” story.

Smaller is bigger? Honda’s engineers and designers are almost giddy talking about a lower and shorter overall CR-V with more cabin and cargo room. The secret? They moved the windshield forward and lowered the cargo floor. There is also an improved instrument panel and, unlike with the latest Civic, the cabin materials are pretty decent.

The CR-V, of course, is Honda Canada’s second best-selling vehicle and one of Honda’s top sellers worldwide. This rig matters. A lot. Especially in the wake of the redesigned 2012 Civic.
The Civic, as you know, has been whacked by critics for shortcomings that start with an interior seemingly inspired by Filene’s Basement. A repeat of the Civic launch would be a major disaster for Honda.

But that doesn’t seem to be the case here, even though the CR-V and the Civic share the same basic mechanical base. Moreover, the 2012 CR-V is following in the tire tracks of the Civic in the most important way of all way: pricing.

The base model has dropped to $25,990 versus $26,290 for the 2011 starter wagon. At the other end, Honda Canada has a new top-of-line Touring model at $34,990. The 2011 CR-V topped out at $33,490. The 2012 Touring is the ritzy CR-V, loaded up with standard AWD, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, chrome door handles, roof rails and a long list of other standard features on all CR-Vs: Bluetooth HandsFreeLink yakking, a full-colour multi-information display, a multi-angle rearview camera with guidelines and heated front seats. air conditioning, cruise control, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, rear-seat heater ducts and a 160-watt AM/FM/CD player.

Honda is anxious to share all this, and to reclaim its mojo with a successful CR-V launch. That said, let’s give Honda credit for owning up to past Civic mistakes. At December’s Tokyo Motor Show, Honda Motor president Takanobu Ito took personal responsibility for the bad Civic reviews, noted Automotive News. The company’s global research and development chief said Honda simply took its eye off the two most important balls in the car business: the competition and the customer.

Yoshiharu Yamamoto, president of Honda R&D, told Automotive News that with the 2012 Civic, “our competitors, including Hyundai and Ford, set clear targets to make their cars better than the Civic. We probably did not pay close enough attention to where our competitors were at.” Confession is good for the soul, correct?

So is the realization that the CR-V is one of four core models for Honda and all will have been remade by the middle of next year. Honda is a car company with only a handful of high-volume offerings, so the pressure is on to make each one a winner. The relatively new Odyssey minivan is excellent, the new Civic, not so much. Next year we’ll get a new Accord mid-size car.

With the CR-V, the designers have delivered a wagon with a more aerodynamic design. Prettier? Not so sure, though the slicker sheet metal is a critical for fuel economy. Bake in a weight reduction and less engine friction and out pops a CR-V with slightly more horsepower (185 versus 180 before), quicker acceleration and better fuel economy – despite the mostly carryover powertrain.

The numbers: the 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine is rated at 9.0 litres/100 km city/6.5 highway (two-wheel drive) and 9.2 city/6.6 highway (AWD). Honda’s engineers are also touting the new “ECON” operating mode for those who want to squeeze out even more fuel efficiency. The four-banger is the only engine Honda offers with the CR-V; there is no V-6 or turbocharged option, as is the case with some rivals.

To improve the drive, Honda stiffened up the CR-V with a strengthened tailgate area and thicker gauge steel in certain areas. The AWD system now has electronic actuation of the torque split mechanism between the front and rear wheels, though the basic design is a carryover hydraulic system. The improvement is simple and important: the rear wheels always get some power at startup and 100 per cent of engine torque can be sent to the front or rear wheels. Also to save fuel, Honda has gone to full electric power steering.

The cabin is comfortable and tasteful and even clever in some ways. For instance, the split-folding rear seats will drop flat with the touch of a lever easily reached from the tailgate. A nifty space in the centre console provides excellent storage, where it’s often needed.

But Honda does need to remember the competition with rival models that offer more horsepower and lower pricing. The new CR-V’s ride also could be quieter at highway speeds, the five-speed automatic transmission is nothing special and the design at the very least gives this crossover a big rear end with some visibility issues.

Nonetheless, this Honda sells in big numbers for many good reasons – from an excellent quality story, to strong safety ratings, high resale values and overall functionality. That all remains for 2012.

2013 Nissan Pathfinder Concept: 2012 Detroit Auto Show

Just the Facts:
-Nissan's midsize Pathfinder SUV is shifting from a body-on-frame design to unitized construction for model year 2013.
-The Pathfinder Concept previews the production version that will reach U.S. dealers this fall.
-The 2013 Pathfinder gets a smaller V6 engine and continuously variable automatic transmission.

DETROIT — Nissan's midsize Pathfinder SUV is shifting from a body-on-frame design to unitized construction for model year 2013. And that's not the only major change on the fourth-generation Pathfinder that's due to reach U.S. dealers this fall and is previewed in the Pathfinder Concept that debuts here at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show.

To secure a 25-percent increase in combined city/highway fuel economy, while retaining the vehicle's towing capability, Nissan is reducing the weight of the 2013 Pathfinder and fitting it with a smaller-displacement V6 and a continuously variable automatic transmission.

The current 2012 Pathfinder, which shares its body-on-frame architecture with the much larger Nissan Armada, comes with a standard 4.0-liter V6 and five-speed automatic transmission. The EPA rates that combination at 15 mpg in city driving and 22 mpg on the highway.

The next-gen Pathfinder is likely to borrow heavily from the Murano, which has a 260-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 and a CVT, with EPA city/highway ratings of 18/23 mpg.

Nissan said the smaller V6 in the 2013 Pathfinder "maintains nearly the same horsepower as the previous generation's larger-displacement V6."

The Pathfinder Concept shows off the new exterior design cues that are expected to grace future Nissan trucks, but its interior won't be revealed until either the Chicago or New York auto show.

Nissan said the truck will have three rows of seats, with accommodations for seven passengers.

The automaker said the new Pathfinder will feature an "intuitive four-wheel-drive system," as well as "towing capacity competitive with leaders in the segment." The interior will have "excellent legroom in all three rows and ample cargo room behind the third row."

Inside Line says: Nissan says the 2013 Pathfinder is one of 20 new or redesigned products that it plans to bring to the U.S. market over the next two years.

Burlapp Find: 2013 Nissan Rogue?!?

I for one think that this would be a nice improvement over the existing Rogue, but then again I've always felt that the current Rogue doesn't stack up against the outgoing Nissan X-Trail (only available in Canada at the time, but is still sold abroad).

Honda CR-V makes basic tech standard to compete in the hot cute ute market

By Bill Howard on November 18, 2011 at 2:00 pm

The basics of the connected life are standard on the new Honda CR-V SUV: a USB jack, Bluetooth, text reader, dashboard control of Pandora, and at least one color display. It’s Honda’s way of staying competitive in the burgeoning market for small sport utility vehicles, the so-called cute ute segment. The 2013 Honda CR-V is one of the best, although the equally-new Ford Escape has even more tech available, just not standard with every car.

A test drive in an early-production-run Honda CR-V showed the value of all that tech. When it worked. It was great being able to manipulate Pandora using the car’s big control knobs and see the results on a 5-inch i-MID, or intelligent multi-information display. Big LCDs are less distracting than fiddling with your phone while driving. But I found the connection to iTunes on an Apple iPhone 4S froze several times and so did dashboard control of Pandora. Unplugging and replugging the phone restored the frozen connection, although sometimes it seized up again and you could no longer control the device. That happened on both CR-Vs I drove. You can’t use the phone to control Pandora or iTunes because the car disables local access.

Honda said the glitches might be the early nature of a batch of CR-Vs that won’t reach the public. But if CR-V buyers encounter problems, as I did, they may not have the flexibility afforded Ford Sync users: They can download and install a patch via USB key, or get it in the mail, as is the case of the pending fix to the MyFord Touch interface. With Honda you may be in for a trip back to the dealer. Imagine having to take your PC back to the dealer every time you needed to resolve an issue with Microsoft Office or Adobe Photoshop or iTunes.

The 5-inch i-MID LCD sits at the top of the center stack and shows audio, phone, car computer, and other functions. It’s deeply hooded, yet I found the i-MID was still affected by glare from the sun at times. If you opt for a navigation system, a larger 7-inch LCD goes in the middle of the center stack. Honda says navigation will cost about $1,500 and claims the cost is justified by all the testing automakers have to do. So Honda says. Buy a Ford Escape and you’ll get navigation for $795. Industry analysts say navigation systems should cost less than $1,000.

Pandora in a press release says this if the first “integrated” version of the popular streaming software. A spokesperson clarified to say it considers all versions of Pandora, such as the ones offered by BMW and Ford, to be integrated. The difference may be that the BMW and Ford versions are enabled by software, making them easier to integrate, to offer upgrades or bug fixes, or even to offer similar streaming software such as MOG. When you’re stopped, you can see texts on the i-MID; when you’re moving, they’re only read aloud. You can send the usual canned responses, but Honda, like most other automakers, doesn’t trust its voice recognition software enough to let you dictate a free-form response. What they say is that it would be distracting because the car would have to post a draft of your text on-screen for approval.

Since every CR-V has at least one color display, Honda also made standard a multi-angle backup camera. There’s a rear seat entertainment system available but it’s an either/or option: You can have navigation or rear entertainment, but not both.

Aside from the tech aspects, the 2012 Honda is mostly improved: the cockpit is nicer and fuel economy is up 1-4 mpg (23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway for the front-drive CR-V). There’s a center bin big enough for a purse; the USB connection is there, too. The power steering is electric and that makes possible some additional stability control tech features that help steer you safely through corners when it’s wet or icy outside. But Pandora is iPhone-only, the automatic transmission remains a five-speed (Honda says why bother with more gears since mpg is up), and the ride remains firm to stiff. It will cost about $21,000-$31,000.

If you shop small SUVs, look at the top-selling CR-V in this tech-improved, fourth-generation form; the 2013 Ford Escape (sales leader including fleet sales) with Sync and MyFord Touch optional along with a liftgate that opens when you kick your foot under the back of the car (and the remote key is in your pocket); and an entirely new model, the Mazda CX-5. The Toyota RAV-4 is a top seller, too, but it’s overdue for a model refresh; the Hyundai Santa Fe gets a refresh in the spring.

2012 Honda CR-V pops up on Honda Japan’s website (Interior Shots!)

Click on either picture to get a larger version!
Last month, the 2012 Honda CR-V Concept was revealed, and now, the first images of the production fourth-generation CR-V have come about – Honda’s Japanese website teases the new SUV, which is set to make its debut at next month’s LA Auto Show.

The production model – which you can get a wallpaper of on the website! – retains most of the styling direction as seen on the concept, though the front bumper on it looks more sedate and the wheels, while keeping to the five twin-spoke theme, also look less showy.

The site also has graphics that presents a peek into the all-new vehicle’s interior – there’s certainly more line flow present in the dash, and noticeable cues are a large screen housing the navigation/audio system on the centre stack, with another display console above it; the latter houses what looks very much like a digital interpretation of an analogue clock. Sizeable speedo too, by the looks of it!

Familiar cues have been retained – the climate control switchgear orientation and dash-mounted gearshift, for one, though gone is the void area between the centre console and dash, which was a great space for ladies to house their handbags (as I am told!); in its place it is a open storage unit where the cupholders also reside. Which means the slide-covered storage box just aft of it should be much more voluminous than the present CR-V’s. No tech details as of yet, but LA should take care of that.
