Just spoke to a reliable source at Honda Canada, no word on a 2013 full model change as I was expecting, however it is slated for the 2014 model year. I have not seen any sketches or 'leaked spyshots' of any proposed redesigns but have been affirmed that the Honda Ridgeline is still on.

More than 70 per cent of Honda vehicles sold in Canada will now be built in Canada

ALLISTON, ON, Jan. 23, 2012 /CNW/ - Production of the all-new 2012 Honda CR-V, Canada's top-selling import SUV, officially began today at Honda of Canada Mfg. (HCM) in Alliston, ON. With the addition of CR-V to the Ontario facility, Honda Canada's two best-selling vehicles, the Honda Civic and CR-V, are now being made in Canada by Canadians.

Globe and Mail: 2012 Honda CRV: Honda Gets its Mojo Back

Smaller is bigger. That’s the start of the 2012 Honda CR-V story.

What’s more, this remade compact crossover is more powerful, has better fuel economy, a better all-wheel-drive system and a so-called “value” story.

Smaller is bigger? Honda’s engineers and designers are almost giddy talking about a lower and shorter overall CR-V with more cabin and cargo room. The secret? They moved the windshield forward and lowered the cargo floor. There is also an improved instrument panel and, unlike with the latest Civic, the cabin materials are pretty decent.

The CR-V, of course, is Honda Canada’s second best-selling vehicle and one of Honda’s top sellers worldwide. This rig matters. A lot. Especially in the wake of the redesigned 2012 Civic.
The Civic, as you know, has been whacked by critics for shortcomings that start with an interior seemingly inspired by Filene’s Basement. A repeat of the Civic launch would be a major disaster for Honda.

But that doesn’t seem to be the case here, even though the CR-V and the Civic share the same basic mechanical base. Moreover, the 2012 CR-V is following in the tire tracks of the Civic in the most important way of all way: pricing.

The base model has dropped to $25,990 versus $26,290 for the 2011 starter wagon. At the other end, Honda Canada has a new top-of-line Touring model at $34,990. The 2011 CR-V topped out at $33,490. The 2012 Touring is the ritzy CR-V, loaded up with standard AWD, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, chrome door handles, roof rails and a long list of other standard features on all CR-Vs: Bluetooth HandsFreeLink yakking, a full-colour multi-information display, a multi-angle rearview camera with guidelines and heated front seats. air conditioning, cruise control, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, rear-seat heater ducts and a 160-watt AM/FM/CD player.

Honda is anxious to share all this, and to reclaim its mojo with a successful CR-V launch. That said, let’s give Honda credit for owning up to past Civic mistakes. At December’s Tokyo Motor Show, Honda Motor president Takanobu Ito took personal responsibility for the bad Civic reviews, noted Automotive News. The company’s global research and development chief said Honda simply took its eye off the two most important balls in the car business: the competition and the customer.

Yoshiharu Yamamoto, president of Honda R&D, told Automotive News that with the 2012 Civic, “our competitors, including Hyundai and Ford, set clear targets to make their cars better than the Civic. We probably did not pay close enough attention to where our competitors were at.” Confession is good for the soul, correct?

So is the realization that the CR-V is one of four core models for Honda and all will have been remade by the middle of next year. Honda is a car company with only a handful of high-volume offerings, so the pressure is on to make each one a winner. The relatively new Odyssey minivan is excellent, the new Civic, not so much. Next year we’ll get a new Accord mid-size car.

With the CR-V, the designers have delivered a wagon with a more aerodynamic design. Prettier? Not so sure, though the slicker sheet metal is a critical for fuel economy. Bake in a weight reduction and less engine friction and out pops a CR-V with slightly more horsepower (185 versus 180 before), quicker acceleration and better fuel economy – despite the mostly carryover powertrain.

The numbers: the 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine is rated at 9.0 litres/100 km city/6.5 highway (two-wheel drive) and 9.2 city/6.6 highway (AWD). Honda’s engineers are also touting the new “ECON” operating mode for those who want to squeeze out even more fuel efficiency. The four-banger is the only engine Honda offers with the CR-V; there is no V-6 or turbocharged option, as is the case with some rivals.

To improve the drive, Honda stiffened up the CR-V with a strengthened tailgate area and thicker gauge steel in certain areas. The AWD system now has electronic actuation of the torque split mechanism between the front and rear wheels, though the basic design is a carryover hydraulic system. The improvement is simple and important: the rear wheels always get some power at startup and 100 per cent of engine torque can be sent to the front or rear wheels. Also to save fuel, Honda has gone to full electric power steering.

The cabin is comfortable and tasteful and even clever in some ways. For instance, the split-folding rear seats will drop flat with the touch of a lever easily reached from the tailgate. A nifty space in the centre console provides excellent storage, where it’s often needed.

But Honda does need to remember the competition with rival models that offer more horsepower and lower pricing. The new CR-V’s ride also could be quieter at highway speeds, the five-speed automatic transmission is nothing special and the design at the very least gives this crossover a big rear end with some visibility issues.

Nonetheless, this Honda sells in big numbers for many good reasons – from an excellent quality story, to strong safety ratings, high resale values and overall functionality. That all remains for 2012.

Remix Accord V6 Coupe Overview
In 2011, Performance Auto & Sound Magazine (PASMAG) brought some of the Accord V6's performance potential to light through the Remix Accord - a vehicle that featured style and performance enhancements both inside and out. Updated 2013 Honda Civic Coming Late Next Year, Company Says it Expects to Improve Sales

With less than two weeks to go before the year’s end, we can safely say that one of the biggest disappointments of 2011 was the ninth generation of Honda’s U.S.-market Civic. Launched in April as a 2012 year model, the new Civic was criticized for its drop in quality and was even removed from Consumer Reports’ “Recommended” list.

Honda Motor CEO Takanobu Ito took personal responsibility for the new Civic's poor performance. And now, the company's executives confirm earlier reports that Honda is rushing back to the drawing board much earlier than originally anticipated.

Honda U.S. executive vice president of sales John Mendel may claim that “building a good car isn’t good enough for us, we have to build a great car”, but we suspect that the 13 percent drop in sales to 200,690 units in 2011, is probably the reason why the Civic is getting ready for a redesign only a year after launch.

Tetsuo Iwamura, Honda’s top North American executive, told Bloomberg News that the 2013MY Civic will go on sale by late next year and that it will be “upgraded”. That was to be expected, as the Civic is Honda’s second best-selling car in the U.S. after the Accord.

Iwamura admitted that “the gap between the Civic and the competitors has been narrowed”, adding that “we have to make it wider”. Thus, he revealed that the Japanese carmaker will improve the styling, driving dynamics and comfort of the 2013 MY Civic.

The performance of such a critical model only added insult to injury for Honda, as the March earthquake that hit Japan seriously diminished its inventory and resulted in a 5.3 percent drop in the company's U.S. sales through November.

Despite this year’s performance, Japan’s third biggest carmaker has set quite a high target for next year: it wants its U.S. sales to increase from about 1 million units in 2011 to 1.25 million, and its luxury brand Acura to improve its record even more, from 126,000 to 180,000 deliveries.

“It looks like quite a high jump, but because of the availability problem we had a really low year in 2011”, Iwamura told Bloomberg. “That is the reason why growth looks huge, but for us, it’s a natural growth.”

Honda Canada announces 2012 CR-V pricing

With its new 2012 CR-V set to debut January 4 at dealerships, Honda Canada has released pricing for the popular-selling compact sport-ute.

Pricing will start at $25,990 for the CR-V LX (2WD), while the top-of-line, Canadian-exclusive Touring model with Real Time All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) with Intelligent Control System and other features will be offered with a suggested retail price of $34,990.

As of the end of November, the CR-V is the third-best-selling compact SUV in the country with more than 23,000 units sold, behind the Ford Escape and Dodge Journey.

Honda plants to resume full production

Honda Motor's plants in Japan and North America are set to resume full production following disruption to parts caused by floods in Thailand.

Honda said full production in Japan at the Suzuka and Saitama factories will resume from 5 December while output at its six plants in the US and Canada will return to normal levels from tomorrow (1 December).

Production for January onwards will be decided while monitoring the situation.Honda said all water at the production facilities in Thailand had been removed and clean-up operations began today.

It said the outlook for resumption of production will continue to be carefully examined upon confirming the state of damage to the plant.

Honda said details of the estimated amount of loss and damage from the flood being assessed.

But it adds: "Should any material impact on the company's financial results for the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2012 be anticipated, the company will make a further announcement in a prompt manner."

Honda: Dealer Inventory of 2012 Honda Civic Is Virtually Zero

TORRANCE, California — Sales of the 2012 Honda Civic appear to be stalled, with the Japanese automaker reporting this week that October sales of the Civic were down 2 percent.

Honda tells Inside Line that it's not because the redesigned small car, which debuted with much hoopla at the 2011 New York Auto Show, is not resonating with buyers or needs better direction with advertising or social media efforts. The Japanese automaker says it's because dealer inventory is "virtually zero" due to natural disasters in Asia, including the Japan earthquake and tsunami in March and recent flooding in Thailand.

"Dealers can't sell cars that they don't have on their lots," said Gina Jorge, assistant manager for American Honda Motor Co. public relations in response to an e-mailed query from Inside Line on Thursday. "In fact, most dealers are selling Civics nearly as fast as they receive them."

On November 1 Honda said Civic posted October sales of 16,173, down 1.9 percent from the previous October. It sold 480 units of the 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid, a decline of 24.7 percent from the previous October.

Honda reported year-to-date Civic sales of 183,557 versus 215,393 in the same period in 2010. But it is unclear how many of the 183,557 were 2012 Civics. The various models of the 2012 Civic have been gradually rolled out this year. The sedan, coupe and hybrid versions debuted on April 20; the Civic HF debuted on May 10; the Civic Si coupe and sedan debuted on May 24 and the Civic Natural Gas model debuted on October 18.

Honda said it does not break out sales by model year and does not break out sales by various models with the exception of the Civic Hybrid. It has projected sales of approximately 2,000 Civic Natural Gas models per year in the near term, double the amount sold in recent years.

"Civic sales are down for one simple reason," wrote Chuck Schifsky, an American Honda Motor Co. spokesman in response to the e-mailed query from Inside Line. "Low dealer inventory as a result of a shortage of small parts caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake earlier this year which nearly halted production of the 2012 Civic."

Schifsky noted that flooding in Thailand "will cause another disruption in production."

"It's still too early to say how deeply this will impact production of the '12 Civic," he added. "But because dealer inventory of Civics is virtually zero and dealers are selling the few Civics they are getting almost as soon as the cars arrive, any disruption in Civic production will not help the situation."

He added: "We need to build more Civics and get them to our dealers. This is a supply problem, not a demand problem. There just aren't any Civics on dealer lots."

When the Japan earthquake hit, production of the Civic was just ramping up. Approximately 90 percent of the vehicles Honda sells in North America are built in North America, according to the automaker. The bulk of Civic models, including the sedan, are built in Greensburg, Indiana. Honda began a second production shift last week there, which boosts production to its full 200,000-unit annual capacity.

"While the majority of the parts are sourced in North America, there are a small number of parts that are sourced from Japan," Schifsky wrote. "This is what caused the vehicle shortage."

Honda announced earlier this week that flooding in Thailand will cause another disruption in production, likely delaying the debut of the 2012 Honda CR-V.

"It's still too early to say how deeply this will impact production of the '12 Civic," Schifsky said.

Honda cranks up output as auto sector sees comeback

The engine of the Ontario economy is starting to hum again, propelled mainly by a return to full production at Japanese auto makers’ plants.

Honda of Canada Manufacturing (HMC-N30.00-0.67-2.18%) in Alliston, Ont., said Wednesday that it will begin cranking out 1,600 vehicles a day in November, more than two years after it cut production during the recession and about eight months after it slashed output because of disruptions caused by the March 11 earthquake in Japan.

The two Honda plants in Alliston, located about 90 kilometres north of Toronto, will also operate on two Saturdays a month – likely until at least the end of the year – mainly to build more models of the compact Civic. The top-selling passenger car was redesigned for the 2012 model year, and production and sales were just starting to gear up when the earthquake created chaos in the supply chain and made it difficult for auto makers to get enough parts.

Honda’s move means that two-thirds of Canada’s car and light truck assembly plants will be running on overtime. That’s a major boost for a Canadian economy still in the midst of an anemic recovery from the recession and one in which gross domestic product fell by 0.4 per cent in the second quarter.

“The key point is that auto production did slow significantly in the summer and it did affect the overall economy, but now it is back in full swing,” said Carlos Gomes, a Bank of Nova Scotia economist who follows the auto industry closely.

There were signs in September that the worst had passed, noted industry analyst Dennis DesRosiers, president of DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc., of Richmond Hill, Ont.

Car production at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. (TM-N66.91-0.43-0.64%) in Cambridge, Ont., rose 19 per cent that month from year-earlier levels, Mr. DesRosiers said, compared with a 6.2-per-cent decline in the first nine months of the year.

Since then, Toyota’s other plant in Woodstock, Ont., has returned to a full, two-shift operation and is also working overtime to boost output of the RAV4 crossover.

Nonetheless, when compared with vehicle production in the United States and Mexico, “we’ve been the laggard all year and remained so in September,” Mr. DesRosiers said.

While the assembly industry is located entirely in Ontario and most of the supply base is in that province as well, the production rebound will also contribute to national economic growth, Mr. Gomes said.

The rebound will add almost a full percentage point to the annual growth rate in the fourth quarter, he said. His forecast is that the economy will grow by 1.2 per cent this quarter.

Japan-based auto makers want to increase their inventories, which stood at just 40 days of supply in the U.S. market in September, compared with the usual figure of about 60 days. In addition, U.S. sales jumped by a surprising 10 per cent in September. That means all auto makers want to make sure they have enough vehicles on U.S. dealers’ lots in the fourth quarter.

The U.S. market is the destination for 80 per cent of the Civics, Acura MDX and ZDX models that roll off the Alliston assembly lines.

The shortage of Civics since March means there are several thousand back orders for the car at Canadian dealerships, Jerry Chenkin, executive vice-president of Honda Canada Inc. told reporters at the Alliston plant on Wednesday. Some customers have been waiting as long as 45 days, he said, but the increase in production should cut that to 30 days.

The Civic has been the best-selling passenger car in Canada for the past 13 years and led the second-place Hyundai Elantra by 1,122 vehicles at the end of September, despite a 12-per-cent sales decline in the first nine months of 2011.

Honda Civic Canada's best-selling car, for now

I am shocked that the Civic is still number 1 considering we don't even have any 2012 Civic's on our lot that aren't sold! The lack of stock (due to the disaster in Japan) have wreaked havok on supply of these cars, I would say that if we actually had the cars available to sell that the Civic would be #1 by a landslide....
The Honda Civic is still Canada's best-selling passenger car, but could soon lose that title to Hyundai's fast-charging Elantra, industry figures show.

Sales data from DesRosiers Automotive Consultants show that the Civic was the most popular car in Canada last month and for the first nine months of the year.

But Civic sales slumped more than 20 per cent last month and are down almost 12 per cent year-to-date.

The Korean-made Elantra, on the other hand, is enjoying double-digit increases, with sales this year up almost 35 per cent.

It isn't just the Civic that has recorded slower sales. Sales of the two other traditionally big-selling Japanese models — the Mazda 3 and the Toyota Corolla — are all down significantly.
"The three Japanese models are all struggling," says auto analyst Dennis DesRosiers. "Some of this is due to supply issues related to the tsunami, but also with the increased competitiveness from the Koreans and Detroit-based brands."

DesRosiers says the Chevrolet Cruze has entered the top 10 list because General Motors has been "reasonably successful picking up entry level share with the Cruze."

Volkswagen's Jetta has also made an appearance in the top 10. "VW has positioned and priced the Jetta to be more of a mass appeal vehicle and are having considerable success with this strategy," DesRosiers writes.

In the light truck market, the best-selling vehicles continue to be Ford's F-Series pickups — well ahead of the No. 2 Dodge Ram. But DesRosiers notes that Ram sales are up more than 14 per cent this year, which he attributes to Chrysler being "very aggressive with incentives in this segment."

Total vehicle sales in Canada in the nine months ending Sept. 30 came to 1,224,149. That's up 1.5 per cent from the same period last year.

Honda recalls over 135,000 vehicles in Canada

Markham, Ontario – Honda will recall approximately 135,142 vehicles in Canada to update the automatic transmission software.



The recall affects certain 2005-2010 four-cylinder Accords, 2007-2010 CR-Vs and 2005-2008 Elements.



Without the update, the transmission’s secondary shaft bearing can suffer damage if the transmission is quickly shifted between each of the reverse, neutral and drive positions, such as when “rocking” the vehicle to get out of mud or snow. If the bearing is damaged, it can cause the engine to stall, or lead to difficulty in engaging the parking gear. The update eases the transition between gears to reduce the possibility of damage.
